The Amazing Tiger Tamer

The Amazing Tiger Tamer, wood, clay, fabric, and paint. Inspired by Illustrations of Schoenhut's Marvelous Toys. The Humpty Dumpty Circus. Philadelphia: The A. Schoenhut Co., 1918.

The figure of the tiger tamer always draws my attention in old photos and prints promoting the circus. Using such imagery from the 1920s in conjunction with the Schoenhut catalog (illustrated previously), I tried to emulate that era’s animal tamer’s costume within my design, as well as the color schemes it employed. The sculpture, which incorporates the cam gear method for movement, uses alternating gears to move the tamer’s whip and the tiger’s paw and tail when operational. This piece represents one of the more classic kinetic toys of the exhibition.
